Heritage Audit of the Northern River Nore

Filed Under KKAP · Tagged:

A Heritage Audit of the Northern stretch of the River Nore (from Ballynaslee on the Laois border to the Ossory Bridge in Kilkenny City) is being undertaken on behalf of Kilkenny County Council, in partnership with the Kilkenny Heritage Forum and the Heritage Council, by Kilkenny Archaeology. The Kilkenny Archaeological Project is providing a major input into the audit.

It is hoped this initiative will gather information and raise awareness of the wealth and diversity of heritage (built, natural & cultural) in and along the river corridor. The river has provided a rich source of inspiration for oral history and in particular that associated with fishing. Every turn, bed and rill in the river was given a name, much of which has gone unrecorded. A number of public consultation meetings will be held in the coming weeks to collect the folklore, place names, field-names, river-names and archaeology of the Northern River Nore.

If you live along or have any information on this stretch of river look out for the details of these meetings in the coming weeks, alternatively contact Emma Devine directly at emma@kilkennyarchaeology.ie or phone the office from 9 to 5 Monday to Friday on 056 7752200.
